Sunderland academy striker Jake Waters said his Hebburn Town loan was an experience to remember after helping the Hornets seal a surprise Northern Premier League Premier Division title and promotion to National League North.
As reported by Sunderland Echo, Waters had a stint at Spennymoor Town earlier in the season before Sunderland agreed in early March that he could finish the campaign on South Tyneside under Daniel Moore.
He made an immediate impact on debut, coming off the bench to score twice in a 3-0 home win over Stocksbridge Park Steels, then remained a regular in matchday squads as Hebburn fought for promotion alongside FC United of Manchester and Hednesford Town.
Hebburn entered Saturday’s home game with Rushall Olympic needing a win to confirm the title and a first ever step into non-league’s second tier. They delivered with a 2-0 victory, sparking wild celebrations among a 3,000 capacity crowd at the Trustmark Group Stadium.
Waters featured from the bench in the second half and praised the welcome he received and the togetherness within the squad. He said the spell had been an experience to remember, that these were some of the biggest games of his career, and that it could not have gone any better. With his Sunderland contract up this summer, he added that he does not know what comes next, and will enjoy the moment before seeing what follows.
