James Debayo has joined Joe Gelhardt’s Hull City after around six months as a free agent. He could debut for the Tigers in the FA Cup this weekend when they host fellow Championship side Blackburn.

Leedsunited.news reports that the London-born centre-back joined Leeds in 2021, beating Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea to his signature, and made two senior appearances under Daniel Farke last season.

His contract expired in the summer and, despite an offer to stay, he chose to move on, probably accepting his minutes would be scarce with Leeds promoted. Interest arrived from abroad, yet he only found a new club now.

Hull’s Leeds connections are growing. Captain Lewie Coyle emerged from the Leeds academy and played 23 first-team games, while Darko Gyabi joined in the summer and Oli McBurnie was on the books until 2010.

There was genuine belief he could make it at Elland Road. Joe Rodon said last season that Debayo was calm and mature with a bright future, and that while chances were limited he impressed when called upon.
