Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to name James Maddison as their new captain.

Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi has identified Maddison as Cristian Romero’s successor.

The 29-year-old is set to be formally announced as Tottenham’s new captain in the coming weeks.

Romero has been linked with Chelsea, while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also believed to be keen on signing him.

The Lilywhites have started pre-season today, securing a 1-0 victory over League One club MK Dons in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Hotspur Way.

Maddison was not included in the Spurs’ matchday squad today and Tottenham fans are hoping he is fit to return to action for the next game.

He made three appearances last season, having been out for most of the campaign due to a knee injury he sustained during a friendly against Newcastle United in August 2025.

Romero was named Tottenham captain by Thomas Frank heading into the 2025-26 campaign following Heung-min Son’s departure.

The South American wants to leave this summer, and the club has no plans to stand in his way.

De Zerbi has added Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke to his centre-back options this summer.

Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso, Ben Davies and Archie Gray are other credible options in the position.
