It was known as of last month that James Sands would not remain with FC St. Pauli, for the club was relegated from the Bundesliga. Despite injuries during both loan stints, the New York City FC player played well when healthy. He was capable of staying in Europe, and it was thought that he should. Still, his future was up in the air. Or, at least it used to be.
The club revealed on Thursday that Sands has officially returned from his loan and will be staying with the team. In addition, he signed a contract extension through the 2029-2030 season. There is an option for the following season as well.
Now, when the midfielder was first revealed to be coming back from his loan, it was initially thought that NYCFC should look into selling him this summer. His value would still be high, and other teams would have to understand that he had two bad luck injuries in back-to-back years. But at the same time, it was thought Sands might want to return to fully recover and get back to full fitness in order for the Queens team to find him a future permanent home.
However, that does not appear to be the case. Sporting Director Todd Dunivant told newyorkcityfc.com, "James has been an important part of this Club’s history, has proven himself in this League, and now brings top European experience. As we continue to build our core roster, James will be a vital member of our group moving forward."
In other words, it appears that NYCFC is keeping him for the long term. Even the first-ever Homegrown player alluded to his intention to remain with the Pigeons for the foreseeable future.
"New York City FC has been an important part of my career at every stage," he said. "Whether that was developing as a young player in the Academy, becoming a Homegrown, establishing myself in the First Team, and even giving me these opportunities to develop in Europe, New York City has been with me every step of the way. Now it’s my turn to give the best years of my career back to the Club. From day one, I’ve had a great connection with the fans, and I’m looking forward to keeping that going.”
There is no question that NYCFC needs help defensively, and Sands can play in the defensive midfield and backline. It also helps that he knows the club well and should easily adjust to Pascal Jansen. Of course, he has yet to play under the head coach since he moved to Germany in January 2025.
Sands will upgrade the team immensely, and while it was thought that he might stay in Germany, obviously, he and NYCFC have different plans at this time. Still, one can only believe that if the right team comes along, then he will make that permanent move.
But for now, Sands is back.
