The 39-year-old has been speaking openly about a potential return.
Sheffield Wednesday are in a unique position where relegation to League One could lead to some household names signing for the club.
The Owls endured the direst of seasons because of owner Dejphon Chansiri, but now that he has departed, the cloud of gloom has drifted away from Hillsborough with an air of optimism in its place.
Indeed, the transfer speculation is in full flow at Hillsborough with familiar names like Jamie Vardy, Barry Bannan and Callum Patterson linked with sensational returns to Wednesday.
Now, Vardy, who will be out of contract this summer following his short-term deal with Italian side Cremonese, has spoken openly about a potential return to his boyhood club.

Returning to your former club seems to be all the rage at the moment with Raul Jimenez re-signing for Wolves and Kyle Walker flirting with going back to Sheffield United, but will Vardy return to Sheffield Wednesday?
The veteran striker is nearing the end of his career, and, given what he has achieved, many have predicted him to return to either the Owls or Leicester City.
One of the obvious questions over such a move is about the potential finances, as the 39-year-old would probably have to take a significant wage cut to drop to League One.
Speaking on his own podcast, Jamie Vardy's Having a Party, the forward was asked whether he would return to his boyhood club, but he poured cold water over the idea.
"In short, no," he said before giggling.
Vardy was then asked if a move could potentially happen, to which he provided a similar answer before explaining himself further.
"It's one of them things I've always said once I was let go, that that chapter was kind of shut, but that's just me, that's how I am. Weren't meant to be, so it's never meant to be kind of thing, so.
He was then pushed about the idea of it being a full-circle moment as he was at the club as a child before he provided the same response.
"I just can't see it happening."

Despite seemingly closing the door on a move back to Hillsborough, the fact that Vardy will be a free agent this summer means speculation will not go away.
At 39, the forward probably has one move remaining in his career, and realistically he could take his pick from several lucrative leagues like the MLS or the Saudi Pro League.
However, considering the former Leicester man opted to play in a Serie A relegation battle last season, it tells you that he is not too bothered about a big payday.
Only Vardy knows what offers he has on the table, if any, but once he has received some approaches, then there is every chance he could change his tune.
Footballers are usually coy about their futures, and just because Vardy said no in a YouTube video does not mean a move to South Yorkshire will not happen.
While many might romanticise a Vardy return, it appears many supporters are not too fussed about him coming back to Hillsborough.
One supporter had a different take on Vardy's answer and believes that he is saying no because he is unlikely to get offered the money he wants.
Another provided some context on the situation and pointed out that the 39-year-old was always going to answer a certain way on a podcast.
