La Liga president Javier Tebas has once again found himself at the centre of controversy, this time for suggesting that Real Madrid and their players were partly to blame for the failed plan to hold the Villarreal–Barcelona fixture in Miami.

His remarks have drawn strong reactions, as many view Real Madrid’s stance as a defence of sporting integrity rather than an obstruction.

It should be recalled that Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was one of the most vocal critics of the idea to stage a Spanish league match overseas.

The Belgian shot-stopper openly questioned the fairness of the plan and emphasised that domestic matches should be played under equal conditions – both home and away.

“I’m satisfied. It didn’t make sense to do it without transparency because the games have to be played at your home, as I said yesterday. It’s common sense,” Courtois said following Real Madrid’s victory over Juventus

His comments were widely praised by those who believe football’s true spirit lies in maintaining fairness and respect for tradition, something Real Madrid have always stood by.

Tebas hits back

In response to Courtois’ statements, Javier Tebas reacted sharply in a recent public appearance, saying,

“Why Miami match failed? Lot of reasons, lot of proces. Real Madrid players only know to say adulterated, adulterated, adulterated.

“I hear Courtois and it sounds just like their CEO Jose Angel Sanchez talking. Of course, what are the Real Madrid players going to say,” he added.

However, Tebas’ words have done little to change the narrative. The club’s objection was not about commercial loss, but about preserving the essence of La Liga, ensuring every team plays under equal conditions.

Courtois’ remarks, grounded in logic and sportsmanship, has always been in line with Real Madrid’s opposition of this idea.
