Jean-Philippe Mateta has now scored as many goals as Mo Salah in 2025 after firing Crystal Palace to victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday night.
The French striker scored either side of an Ismaila Sarr brace in a 4-1 win at Selhurst Park for the Eagles. Substitute Eddie Nketiah rounded out the victory with a 91st-minute strike, while Morgan Rogers scored Villa’s only goal of the night.
Mateta is now on 13 Premier League goals for the season, with eight of them coming this calendar, the same amount as Salah has netted in that time for Liverpool. The 27-year-old just needs three more to match his tally for the 2023/24 league campaign.
The former Mainz forward said it was the “perfect night” for Palace as they moved up to 12th in the table.
“We stayed patient, we knew the chances were coming and we stuck to the plan,” he told TNT Sports after the final whistle.
“I am happy. I work hard and when I play with this player [Adam Wharton] I can score every game.”
Palace midfielder Wharton added: “A great win. The fans were unbelievable. We had to be patient. Villa are a top side but we knew if we stuck to the plan and kept the intensity in the game, we would get chances.
“The big man [Mateta] and Ish [Sarr] took their chances really well, and Eddie, I’m buzzing for him.
“The home form’s not been the best but we just go into the game with a clear mind. We know the tactics the gaffer has given and we just stick to the plan.”
