Rennes defender and future Liverpool signing Jérémy Jacquet is due to undergo surgery on his left shoulder this week after his injury at Lens, and his season is probably over.
He dislocated the joint in the 66th minute of a 1-3 defeat in February, five days after his move to Liverpool, worth about 70 million euros, was announced. The club confirmed it on Tuesday.
Just over three weeks on, the 20-year-old Under-21 international has accepted the need for an operation. The decision was taken on Monday evening after discussions with Liverpool.
It is a major setback for a player who wanted to finish the season with his formative club, as he may not play for Rennes again before pulling on the Reds' shirt. A return from this type of shoulder procedure usually takes around two and a half to three months.
Jacquet had emerged as the leader of Rennes' back three under Habib Beye. In his absence, and following Beye's departure, Rennes have moved to a back four with Anthony Rouault and Lilian Brassier in central defence, with success so far.
