Barcelona took on Girona at the Estadi Montilivi on Monday night in their first game after the Atletico Madrid debacle in the Copa del Rey, and all eyes were on whether the Catalans could strike back with a statement.
Hansi Flick’s men, however, were far from as dominant as many hoped, and did not create as many chances as they would have.
They were the better side in the first-half and should have been clear by some distance, but the hosts were significantly better after the break and scored a late winner to take all three points.
Not many would have seen Barcelona take a second straight defeat given the form they were in, but serious questions must now be asked of the team’s situation.
Barça Universal brings you the player ratings from Girona 2-1 Barcelona.
The goalkeeper had a point to prove after his disastrous outing midweek and did so with a solid show at the back for Barcelona. Made two saves in the first-half with good distribution and complete confidence with his ball playing.
Stepped up with a massive triple save in the 71st minute to deny Girona the lead and keep Barcelona in the game but there was not much he could do for the late winner.
Martin was handed a start at left-back against Girona ahead of Alejandro Balde, probably as a usual rotational decision, and did well defensively at left-back.
Did not get forward a whole lot and stayed back to maintain numbers in the back-line but was impressive with his interceptions, tackles, and his potentially goal-saving intervention in the 53rd minute to deny Girona a 1v1 situation with Joan Garcia.

The spotlight was very much on Barcelona’s defence heading into the clash last night, especially after the poor performance against Atletico Madrid which left them red-faced.
Cubarsi recovered well from that disaster-class, distributing the ball well and coming up with a solid show at the back including crucial interceptions, clearances, and tackles.
Scored the team’s opener on the night with a stunning header that was well placed out of the goalkeeper’s reach. Yet, he was at fault for the equaliser as he was too soft with his clearance and his night got worse late into the half.
The academy graduate did well to partner with Cubarsi on the night, rigid with his interceptions and sharp with his movements.
Held up the offside trap to good effect, distributed the ball well, and showed a good understanding with Cubarsi. However, he too faded as the game progressed and began to expose the flaws in defence once more.
The right-back had a decent defensive performance at right-back, especially when compared to his standards this season. Yet, he should have done better to cut off the cross that led to Girona’s equaliser.
Earned the assist for Cubarsi’s opener with a great cross into the area to find the young defender.
The captain was responsible for progressing the play for Barcelona on the night, especially with Pedri still out.
Did well to maintain the team’s tempo in attack and with his defensive contributions, cut off Girona counters but his influence began to fade as the game progressed.
The midfielder was one of Barcelona’s better players in the first half, looking sharp in possession and with his movements. Despite playing as a pseudo-interior, he did not hesitate to get into the Girona area and create a nuisance in the box.
Earned the penalty late in the first half by being in the right place at the right time but unfortunately it was in vain.
The La Masia midfielder had a decent outing as he looked to create a threat in the Girona box with his movements in the final third.
While he did do so with some of his passes through the lines, he did not individually see as many chances as he would have wanted to score.

Yamal had a rather painful first 45 minutes at Montilivi as matters did not quite go his way in the period. He had the team’s best chance of the first half from open play in a 1v1 after a surreal dribble but was very poor with the finish.
He then stepped up to take the penalty late in the first period and hit the woodwork, spurning a second massive chance on the night as well. Could not really make amends after the break either.

Despite just returning from injury and directly entering Barcelona’s starting XI on the night, Raphinha was the team’s hardest-working player on the field which says a lot about the team’s performance.
The Brazilian was on full throttle, pressing high out of possession and going for goal whenever presented with a chance in attack. Came close to scoring on a couple of occasions in the first period but could not capitalise.
The striker was not extensively involved in Barcelona’s buildup on the night, acting rather as a poacher hoping to get onto the end of the final ball.
However, he did not pull off anything extraordinary or of much importance for most of the night.
