Joan Laporta has resigned as Barcelona president, a required step to allow him to stand again in the club’s election set for 15 March.

As required by the club’s statutes, he confirmed his departure on Monday. The club said in a statement that Rafael Yuste, his vice-president, will serve as interim president until 30 June. That date is the scheduled end of the term that began in 2021.

The move had been anticipated for several weeks.

Socios are due to vote on 13 March.

Victor Font, runner-up in 2021, is viewed as Laporta’s principal rival. He has public backing from Xavi, the Barça great who coached the team from 2021 to 2024.
