Joan Laporta has secured a resounding mandate to lead FC Barcelona until 2031 after emerging victorious in Sunday’s presidential election.
The 63-year-old defeated his sole rival, Victor Font, with an overwhelming 68.18% of the vote.
Shortly after midnight at the Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona confirmed that Laporta’s candidacy had garnered a whopping 32,934 votes, with Font receiving 14,385 (29.78%) and 984 blank ballots (2.04%).
Font conceded defeat before the final tally was completed, describing Laporta’s victory as ‘unquestionable’.
Laporta’s re-election marks the first time since 1997 that an incumbent Barcelona president has secured a second consecutive term.
“This is a resounding result, and it gives us great strength,” Laporta said shortly after the result was announced.
“It makes us unstoppable. No one will stop us. Exciting years lie ahead. They will be the best of our lives.
“This is a wonderful club, where the members elect their president and board of directors. A club unique in the world, truly extraordinary.”
The victory is widely seen as a vote of confidence in the club’s current trajectory under head coach Hansi Flick. Despite well-documented financial levers and a debt profile exceeding €2 billion, Laporta’s ability to deliver on-pitch success for Barcelona proved decisive for the 48,480 members who voted.
Laporta’s fourth overall term will be defined by his ability to navigate Barcelona’s complex financial landscape.
His immediate priorities include overseeing the final stages of the Spotify Camp Nou renovation and further reducing the wage bill to comply with La Liga’s stringent spending caps.
