Joao Gomes completes move to Aston Villa from rivals Wolves | OneFootball

Brazil international Joao Gomes has joined Aston Villa from arch-rivals Wolves in a deal reportedly worth £38m.

Midfielder Gomes, 25, who has won 10 caps for his country, ends a three-and-a-half-year spell at Wolves where he made 130 appearances after signing from Flamengo in Brazil.

Wolves technical director Matt Jackson said: “Joao deserves everything he gets from the game. He’s the type of professional that coaches love and players love, so he will go on to be the outstanding player that we know he is.”

He crosses the West Midlands divide after Wolves’ relegation, a season which saw him make 35 appearances.

His only goal last term came against the Villans, netting in a shock 2-0 win over the Champions League side at Molineux in February.

Gomes’ arrival at Villa comes following the departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and Morgan Rogers on the brink of making a £117m move to Chelsea.

He was not included in Brazil’s World Cup squad which got knocked out by Norway in the round of 16, meaning he arrives at Villa Park fresh off a break ahead of pre-season.

Villa play their first friendly against Walsall on Tuesday and begin their competitive campaign against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup on 12 August.

Their first Premier League game is away to Brighton on 23 August.
