Leeds United striker Joel Piroe looks set for a Suriname debut this month after a first senior call-up for a pivotal international window.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 26-year-old, born in the Netherlands and eligible through his father, switched allegiance earlier this year and is in Henk ten Cate’s 26-man squad.
Suriname are two wins from a first World Cup and face Bolivia in Guadalupe on Thursday, 26 March, with victory setting up a decider against Iraq the following week.
In January he said he weighed up the decision with his father, felt proud to choose Suriname and wanted to write history, adding that visits deepened his bond and belief before Bolivia.
He recently opened his account for the season in a 3-0 FA Cup win over Norwich City. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a former Leeds striker, is among Ten Cate’s assistants.
Ex-Elland Road forward Jay-Roy Grot is also included. Signed from NEC Nijmegen at 19 in 2017, he scored once in 23 appearances before loans and a February 2021 move to VfL Osnabrück. Now at Odense Boldklub, he has two goals in 11 this season and could partner Piroe.
