Flamengo are renowned for their academy, yet recent seasons have brought few first-team chances for youngsters. Director of football José Boto has addressed the issue.

"What defines Flamengo is that phrase on the office wall, 'Win, win, win'. Here there is no other option. We do not have the culture we have in Portugal of making the club financially sustainable through sales or player development," he told A Bola.

"Here the focus is completely on winning. You have to adapt to that, which is why I tried to bring in ready, experienced players, because it is not easy to play for Flamengo. The pressure of playing at the Maracanã is very big, so players need certain psychological traits, experience and maturity."

During the World Cup break, Leonardo Jardim plans to test several Flamengo prospects, and the youngsters will have the chance to train with the senior squad as nine players have been called up.

The squad are currently on holiday during the calendar pause. Flamengo’s next match in 2026 is scheduled for 22 July, against Chapecoense in the 19th round of the Brasileirão. Before that, they will hold an interseason camp in Portugal with three friendlies against Falkirk (ESC), Birmigham (ING) and Benfica (POR).
