Flamengo director of football José Boto has taken responsibility for sacking head coach Filipe Luís, speaking on Thursday before Leonardo Jardim’s unveiling.
According to Globo.com, the Portuguese executive addressed the decision without taking questions, saying he was tasked to diagnose problems and propose solutions, which the president then approved as the final decision-maker.
He added that the reasons are varied and would not be made public, calling that stance professional. Boto said difficult choices that can appear illogical are part of the job, and he praised Filipe’s work and future prospects.
Boto backed Jardim as the solution, citing his experience, success in different contexts and a career built from the bottom to the top over more than 20 years. He believes Jardim can maximise what he considers the best squad in the Americas.
Jardim is set to make his debut on Sunday in the Flamengo v Fluminense derby, the Campeonato Carioca 2026 final. He still needs registration in the CBF’s Boletim Informativo Diário, the BID, to be on the touchline.
