Former Corinthians midfielder José Martínez has undergone surgery in São Paulo to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The Venezuelan is expected to be out for eight to 10 months.
His management company posted images from hospital and said the operation was successful, carried out as planned, and that rehabilitation now begins alongside family and medical staff.
The procedure was paid for by Corinthians as part of the contract termination agreement. The board had been assessing ways to end his deal after a series of issues, including a return more than a month late due to passport renewal problems in Venezuela.
During the holiday period, footage showed him playing in a festive match in Venezuela with a knee brace, and in other clips he appeared to be limping. The delay and the injury context displeased coach Dorival Júnior and the club hierarchy.
Martínez joined in August 2024 from Philadelphia Union in a deal worth two million dollars. Corinthians were sanctioned by Fifa for late payment of the transfer. He played 70 games, scored two goals, made two assists, and was part of the squads that won the Paulistão and the 2025 Copa do Brasil.
