Real Madrid’s summer rebuild could involve yet another addition to the defensive department, with Jose Mourinho identifying a new target capable of adding flexibility and depth to his squad.
According to journalist Ramon Alvarez de Mon, the incoming Real Madrid manager has asked the club to explore the possibility of signing Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori.
The Italian international has impressed Mourinho with his ability to perform in multiple positions across the backline, making him an attractive option as preparations for the new season continue.
The Portuguese coach is believed to be focused on strengthening the team’s defensive structure and ensuring he has enough tactical options to compete on all fronts.

Simply put, Calafiori’s versatility appears to be the main reason behind Mourinho’s interest.
The 24-year-old is naturally a central defender but is equally comfortable operating at left-back when required.
His ability to switch between both positions gives coaches greater flexibility, particularly during a demanding season where injuries and fixture congestion can create selection problems.
Mourinho has specifically highlighted these strengths and has encouraged Real Madrid to assess whether a deal for the Premier League winner could be possible.
Mourinho’s request comes at a time when the club is already planning significant defensive changes.

Florentino Perez recently confirmed that Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate will join the project if he remains in charge, with further reinforcements also being considered.
As a result, Real Madrid’s defensive department could look very different by the time next season begins.
On paper, left-back is not an area where Real Madrid appear desperately short of options. However, as reported before, Mourinho is not fully convinced by the current situation.
As such, Alvaro Carreras is viewed as the club’s leading option in that position, but Mourinho wants a player he considers more complete and better suited to his tactical demands, which explains the growing interest in Calafiori.
