José Mourinho has made it clear the word desistir, meaning give up, has no place in Benfica’s dressing room as the run-in begins. According to Glorioso 1904, he does not want it heard before the season ends.
Benfica returned to training this week to prepare for Porto at Estádio da Luz on Sunday, 8 March, following a demanding 2-1 win over Gil Vicente in Barcelos.
Mourinho has stressed Benfica must keep fighting for the title while it remains mathematically possible, aiming to keep defeatist thoughts out of the camp.
Despite the physical and emotional toll of a recent European exit to Real Madrid, the side responded on the pitch with attitude and resilience, which the coach highlighted after the match.
The Barcelos victory marked their best spell of this league campaign, four consecutive wins against Alverca, Santa Clara, AFS SAD and Gil Vicente, a first for the Eagles this season.
With 10 rounds remaining, the message at the Luz is unchanged, the title is still in play. President Rui Costa has said the club will fight to the last breath for a 39th championship.
