Benfica remain without a win against Portugal’s main rivals since José Mourinho returned, the 2-2 draw with Porto extending an unwanted run.
Meetings with Porto, Sporting and Braga have delivered two defeats and four draws to date. Glorioso 1904 notes that recent results have compounded that picture.
They went out of the Taça da Liga with a 3-1 defeat to Braga, then exited the Taça de Portugal at the Dragão after a 1-0 loss to Porto. They most recently drew 2-2 at the Luz, a result that left the league gap between the sides unchanged.
Despite those struggles against direct rivals, Benfica are on a lengthy unbeaten spell in the league, extended by Leandro Barreiro’s late goal.
The team are now 40 league matches without defeat. Their last loss came on 25 January last year against Casa Pia in Rio Maior. Eight draws have shaped the current campaign.
Benfica visit Arouca on Saturday 14 March in the 26th round of Liga Portugal Betclic, with kick-off at 20:30 against Vasco Seabra’s side.
