José Mourinho wants further reinforcements and Benfica are in step with him, yet any move for a midfielder this winter will hinge on conditions.
According to Record, Benfica will only move for a new midfielder if the recoveries of Richard Ríos and Enzo Barrenechea take longer than expected, with Ríos having opted against surgery.
The fitness of Barrenechea and Mani is not favourable, so the club will monitor their progress before deciding whether to enter the market for another midfielder.
Another factor is their Champions League trajectory, with any reinforcement likely only if they are close to booking a place in the next round, which would deliver the funds to sanction a deal.
For now, Benfica’s window has been marked by setbacks across several negotiations. This week, indications are that the club will do everything to close the signing of Rafa Silva.
