The USA international has spent the last four-and-a-half years with the Canaries after joining the club from German side Werder Bremen, and he has been highly influential on the pitch throughout the last few seasons.

However, after 157 games, 56 goals and 15 assists, Sargent is set to part ways with the Championship club after significant interest in his services in both the summer and now the January transfer window.

Football League World has taken a look at the most recent news regarding the 25-year-old, and rounded it up with the transfer window set to shut on February 2.

Josh Sargent has major fallout with Norwich City chiefs

It was reported on Wednesday that Sargent had been left 'visibly upset' following a meeting between himself, Norwich's sporting director, Ben Knapper, and Phillipe Clement.

The forward has been left out of the Canaries' last three squads and, according to The Athletic's MLS Insider, Tom Bogert, tensions have been at an all-time high.

He posted: "After a heated meeting with Norwich City sporting director Ben Knapper and head coach Philippe Clement, it appears that Josh Sargent has played his last game for the club.

"Sargent was seen visibly upset. One source says there was a comment made regarding Sargent's family, which was the last straw. He continues to train with the second team as he pushes for a transfer to Toronto FC. TFC & Norwich continue negotiations."

It has been a shocking development to Sargent's transfer story, and there's seemingly no way back between all parties.

Josh Sargent rejects two Premier League sides as preferred destination set

While Burnley and Wolfsburg missed out on Sargent during the summer, teams in Europe's top divisions have come calling once again this month.

Both Leeds United and Sunderland have shown an interest in the American, but TEAMtalk have said that they have both missed out on bringing the 25-year-old to the Premier League.

Instead, it is MLS side Toronto who look to have won the battle for the Norwich star and he will head back to North America as he looks to earn a spot in Mauricio Pochettino's squad for the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and his home nation of the USA.

It has been reported that Toronto are looking to secure a £15m deal for Sargent, as he closes in on the end of his stay in the EFL.

Brad Friedel weighs in on Josh Sargent, Norwich City situation

This is a critical transfer window for players across the world, as preparations for this summer's World Cup step up, and finding form at a good level is vital to their chances of making it to the tournament.

Sargent appears to be part of that group, and USA legend and former Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Brad Friedel has backed the Norwich man in this situation. He said to Goal: "It depends on family life and what is going on in your life. Can MLS compete with the Championship in England and Norwich? You could make that argument.

"If you are talking about [Weston] McKennie and [Christian] Pulisic, they wouldn’t be going to the Championship in England, they would be signed by one of the top eight clubs, I would assume, in the Premier League. It’s a completely different argument.

"If Toronto, who are trying to build another competitive team, see Josh Sargent as the guy and Josh is in a relegation fight in the Championship, I can understand him wanting to go to Toronto. But, I still think if you are called to play or train then you train and you play. The deals will either work out or they won’t work out, that’s how it is."
