Sheffield Wednesday forward Jamal Lowe revealed a thinly-veiled dig towards owner Dejphon Chansiri following the latest non-payment of wages

Sheffield Wednesday have endured months of profound turmoil under the much-criticised ownership of Dejphon Chansiri, whose continued financial mismanagement and reluctance to sanction a sale has left the Owls in a precarious position both on and off-the-pitch.

The Owls' plight has been well-documented in recent times, with a desperate battle against relegation to League One looming for Henrik Pedersen's side after securing a mid-table finish under now-ex-boss Danny Rohl in the 2024/25 campaign.

Owing to Chansiri's mismanagement, Wednesday are under five English Football League embargoes at the time of writing and have been struck with a fee-restriction ban until the end of the 2027 January transfer window amid the continued delayed payment of wages.

That, of course, has been one of the most pressing concerns at Hillsborough of late.

It has now emerged that, for the fifth time in just seven months, the Thai businessman has failed to pay the club's senior players on time, with non-football staff reportedly provided a part-payment of just £1,0000 of their total September salaries.

It's an issue which is having a severe impact on the club from top to bottom, and, back in the summer, popular goalscoring duo Michael Smith and Josh Windass both handed in notices following the repeated failure of wage payments, which enabled the pair to join Preston North End and Wrexham respectively on free transfers.

However, both on and away from the field, Wednesday players have been able to — on occasion, of course — make light of the situation.

The Owls remain threatened by relegation but have shown a remarkable fight to date, taking recent points from the likes of Portsmouth, QPR and Birmingham City, and, following Tuesday evening's 2-2 draw with the latter, Jamal Lowe and co aimed a handful of thinly-veiled digs towards Chansiri amid the current situation.

The draw away to promotion hopefuls Birmingham, in which Wednesday were only denied of all three points courtesy of Demarai Gray's contentious 99th-minute equaliser deep into additional time, continued an impressive run of form, coming after four points taken from Portsmouth and QPR in the previous two ahead of Saturday's home fixture against high-flying Coventry City.

Lowe, who scored on four occasions for Wednesday last term, opened his account for the Championship season just before the interval and was delighted to get on the scoresheet, even taking time to fire a subtle yet humorous dig towards Chansiri following the latest round of non-payment for wages.

The ex-Bournemouth and Swansea City forward wrote on his Instagram afterwards: "Deserved All 3 But We’ll Keep Fighting! Away Support Was Top & A Strong Team Performance #GoalsLikeJamz 🦉⚡️🔫"

However, it's not the caption which has got Wednesday supporters and players alike going.

Instead, it's the song attached to the post — named "PAY ME" — making fun of a situation which is, quite clearly, hitting everybody at Hillsborough hard apart from Chansiri himself.

The aforementioned Windass, who has since displayed fine early-season form infront of goal for Wrexham, simply commented: "Man said pay me 😂"

Sheffield Wednesday have high spirits despite Dejphon Chansiri crisis

It's testament to the strength and resilience of this Wednesday side, and the tight-knit squad culture which has been fostered and remains unbroken in spite of such adversity, that spirits are still high.

Regardless of the jokes on social media, it goes without saying that the players — and their loved ones, for that matter — will be feeling the financial and emotional effects of the situation, yet they've still displayed such strength and fortitude on the pitch, and have managed to stay together off it.

That can't be easy. It would, in contrast, be rather easy, and entirely understandable, for spirits to be dampened completely, but Wednesday are giving it their best shot and an almighty fight, while also finding time to make light-hearted fun of the state of play.

As the old adage goes, if you don't laugh you'll cry, and although everybody connected with Wednesday in any capacity wishes for the situation to find its resolution as swiftly as possible — that being an exit for Chansiri, of course — camaraderie and high spirits are going to go a long way for as long as his chaotic ownership persists.
