Ollie Palmer's brace helped Wrexham secure a place in the second round of the EFL Cup

Josh Windass has poked fun at his previous comments about current Wrexham teammate Ollie Palmer after his important brace against Hull City on Tuesday.

The forward came off the bench to score two goals in stoppage time to secure a 3-3 draw for the Red Dragons in their EFL Cup clash.

Phil Parkinson’s side ultimately earned safe passage into the second round with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory, with Palmer’s late goal double proving crucial.

In an interview in February 2024, Windass claimed Palmer was delusional for claiming he’d score 20 goals in Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.

Windass has posted on social media his praise for Palmer’s role in Wrexham’s cup triumph over Hull.

He joked that the 33-year-old could actually potentially score 20 goals for Man City after his display on Tuesday night.

“Maybe you would score 20 for Man City after all @olliep9_,” wrote Windass, via Instagram.

It was a surprise to see Palmer in the squad for Wrexham’s cup game given he has fallen down the pecking order of Parkinson’s squad.

The forward featured 27 times in League One last season, but his last appearance for the side came on 28 January in a 3-2 loss to Stevenage.

Palmer’s future at the Racecourse Ground has been the subject of some speculation throughout the summer, but he remains a part of the club for the time being.

Wrexham’s summer business

Wrexham have been quite active so far this summer following their promotion to the Championship.

The Red Dragons have signed Lewis O’Brien, Liberato Cacace, Conor Coady, Kieffer Moore, George Thomason, Ryan Hardie, Danny Ward and Windass.

And their business may not be finished there, with the club having until 1 September to complete any remaining moves, which may still include the departure of Palmer.

Next up for Wrexham is a home clash against West Brom on 16 August in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Palmer’s showing has come at the right time

If Palmer still has no future as part of Parkinson’s plans, then this brace has come at the right time of the season for him.

His two goals turned the game on its head, and put him out in the shop window by showing he can still find the back of the net in the pressure moment.

Wrexham will be delighted with the impact he had, and it could even convince Parkinson that the 33-year-old deserves a chance in the squad if a move away isn’t found.

Windass joking around about his past comments is also a positive look for the dressing room, and indicates there are no hard feelings about it at all.
