Josko Gvardiol is set to sign a new five-year contract with Manchester City.
The Croatia international’s future had been in some doubt amid interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich but will commit his future to City.
The Spanish club are instead set to sign other defenders, in Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool, while the German champions are expected to bring in left-back Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Gvardiol is the most expensive defender in City’s history, joining from RB Leipzig for £77m in 2023.
He has gone on to score 13 goals in 122 games for City, winning their player-of-the-year award in 2024-25.
However, he missed much of the second half of this season with a broken leg while Marc Guehi and Abdukodir Khusanov established themselves as the regular centre-back partnership and Nico O’Reilly excelled at left-back.
But now the 24-year-old has agreed to stay at City as their defence takes shape for the era after Pep Guardiola. John Stones is leaving on a free transfer and Nathan Ake could also depart.
