Jude Bellingham has played down the on-field exchange he shared with Lionel Messi during England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, insisting the incident was nothing more than a brief disagreement over a refereeing decision.
The Real Madrid midfielder was seen speaking animatedly with the Argentina captain during the 2-1 encounter, sparking widespread discussion as two of football’s biggest names went head-to-head on the sport’s grandest stage.
With Argentina securing a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, attention shifted to the conversation between Bellingham and Messi, but the England international was keen to dismiss suggestions of any lasting confrontation.
Speaking after England’s elimination, Bellingham explained that the exchange stemmed from differing opinions over a foul awarded in Argentina’s favour rather than any personal disagreement.
“The chat with Messi? Actually, we were discussing a foul. It was nothing out of the ordinary.
I’m sure everyone will blow it out of proportion and make a big deal of it, but it was nothing,” he began, according to AS.
The Real Madrid star then revealed how the discussion unfolded as both players defended their own viewpoints during the heated contest.
“I thought there’d been a foul earlier and he said, ‘What about the one they committed on me?’ And I said, ‘You’re strong enough to take it,’ you know what I mean?”
Although emotions ran high during the semi-final, Bellingham explained that there was nothing unusual about the moment, describing it as the kind of exchange that naturally occurs in matches of such magnitude.
Despite the disappointment of England’s exit, Bellingham had no hesitation in recognising Messi’s influence on the game and the challenge of facing one of football’s greatest players.

“I’m on the losing side, which hurts a lot, but it’s a privilege to play against one of the best.”
The 23-year-old also admitted that missing out on a place in the World Cup final was one of the toughest moments of his career, apologising to England supporters after another painful near miss on the international stage.
“It’s so heartbreaking. I wanted to be part of the England team that finally pulled it off.
“Standing here telling the fans the same things they’ve probably been hearing for years and years is truly heartbreaking. I’m sorry,” he concluded.
