Unadulterated drama. That is the only way to describe the absolute circus in Florida as England dragged themselves into the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals. It took extra time, a massive slice of luck, and a healthy dose of individual genius to see off a bloody-minded Norway side 2-1.
Andreas Schjelderup gave the underdogs a shock lead after 36 minutes. For a while, England looked completely devoid of ideas, bogged down in a tactical chess match they were actively losing. Then Jude Bellingham happened. Equalising deep in first-half stoppage time, the Real Madrid man breathed life back into a sluggish team before populating the back of the net again in extra time to secure a final-four spot for the first time since 2018.
Looked remarkably shaky in the air all evening. He got away with murder when VAR scrubbed out a second-half Torbjørn Heggem goal for a Erling Haaland foul, but you cannot ignore his vital first-half stop to deny the Manchester City striker.
Asked to play out on the right to deal with Norway’s physical frontline. Did what was asked of him before making way for Morgan Rogers as the clock ticked down.
Cool as you like. Distributed the ball cleanly from the back and acted as the calm presence England desperately needed when the Norwegian press turned up the heat.
Had the unenviable task of wrestling with Haaland. Stood up to the physical battle well and kept the big man starved of clear sight on goal.
A proper baptism of fire for the youngster on the left flank. Caught out of position far too often and was taken off for Djed Spence.
Did a decent shielding job in the first half but offered very little going forward. The manager swapped him at the break for a bit more attacking intent.
Pure energy in the engine room. Had a hand in the equaliser after a bizarre moment where the ball clipped an aerial camera cable, reacting quicker than anyone else.

Carried the entire nation on his back. A clinical finisher for the first, an ice-cold match-winner in extra time. He now sits level with Harry Kane in the Golden Boot race with six goals. Incredible.
Completely anonymous on the right wing. His refusal to track back put his defenders in trouble, and he had no complaints about being hauled off at half-time.
Flashed plenty of pace, but the final ball just was not there. Ran himself into the ground before Reece James came on to solidify things.
Dropped deep into midfield to link the play because the service into the box was nonexistent. No real chances to score, but his presence kept the Norwegian centre-backs occupied.
His half-time introduction changed the game. Instantly gave the right flank some bite and stretched the tiring Norwegian defence with direct, aggressive runs behind.
Came on for Rice and gave England some much-needed progression through the middle of the park with his direct carrying.
Brought on to shut things down on the wing during the final stages of normal time. Done his job.
Almost scored one of the strangest goals in World Cup history by blocking the goalkeeper’s clearance in the dying seconds.
Put himself about late on. His intense pressing caused genuine panic in the opposition penalty box when legs were tiring.
Thrown on during the second half of extra time for the sole purpose of clearing his lines and making England impossible to break down.
