Atlético go to the Emirates with a fourth Champions League final in sight after a 1-1 first leg. A decade on from their last appearance, a single goal could take Simeone’s side through.
El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that Álvarez’s 2024 arrival stunned many, given he was 23 and had 18 goals for Manchester City. Simeone’s persistence, plus the striker’s view that Haaland blocked his path, delivered a deal of about €90 million, second only to João Félix at €120 million.
Álvarez settled quickly under Simeone. He scored a penalty in the first leg then left with a twisted ankle, yet his presence at the Emirates is not in doubt. Simeone said Álvarez, Sorloth and Giuliano are improving and selection would be decided in the morning.
He has 20 goals and nine assists this season, down on 29 and eight in his first year in Madrid. In Europe he has 10 goals and four assists in 14 Champions League matches, with only Mbappé on 15 and Kane on 13 ahead.
Atlético’s domestic output has dipped amid an early exit from the title race and Simeone’s rotation. Since 8 February he has started only once in La Liga, the 22 March derby at the Bernabéu, and he has not featured in the five league games since.
He has been linked with Barcelona and Arsenal. Despite a €500 million release clause and a deal to 2030, Atlético are weighing an improved renewal, while Griezmann’s confirmed move to MLS further elevates Álvarez’s importance.
