Julien Stephan must see QPR cash windfall after huge triple boost

QPR have a potentially exciting future heading into the summer and beyond, with Julien Stephan set for a potential cash windfall after a triple boost.

QPR's 6-1 win against Portsmouth was a huge victory for Julien Stephan's side, even if the play-offs are out of reach for the Hoops.

They have a 10-point gap to Southampton in sixth to try and bridge during the final seven games of the season, with QPR also 14 above the drop zone and now looking towards 2026/27.

It will be their 12th consecutive year at the level, but QPR have a strong foundation to build upon. That is underlined by the fact only Sheffield Wednesday, Norwich City, and Watford have a lower average age of squad than QPR.

It was also underlined further on Saturday during the comprehensive victory over Pompey. The future is bright for a side who last spent a season in the top flight in 2014/15, during a period of three out of four years in the English top flight.

Richard Kone, Rayan Kolli, and Harvey Vale is an attack QPR can build around

Regarding Saturday's victory, there are results, and then there are statements. For QPR, a 6-1 demolition of Portsmouth falls firmly into the latter category after removing any lingering doubts over their status next season.

But it was a statement not just for the scoreline, but for what it could represent moving forward under Stephan. While QPR’s 2025/26 campaign won't end in promotion, this was the kind of performance that hints at something far more sustainable brewing beneath the surface.

Harvey Vale’s pair of assists, coupled with magnificent braces from Rayan Kolli and Richard Kone, offered a glimpse into a future that could be both exciting on the pitch and hugely valuable off it.

By the time that the summer transfer window opens, all three will remain 23 or under, but more crucially, they already look capable of influencing games at Championship level. That matters when working on plans for the coming season.

In a division where financial flexibility is often limited, developing your own match-winners — or smartly acquiring them before their value explodes — is the clearest path to progression and stability.

Stephan must now recognise the position QPR find themselves in. There’s a genuine opportunity to build a young, cohesive core that can grow together over the next 12–24 months. If managed correctly, this is a group that could realistically push the club into promotion contention by 2026/27.

They could form the spine of a side that are easy on the eye in attack for years to come, with only seven teams currently outscoring Stephan's side. QPR need to build around these players with more seasoned defensive quality next season.

The other angle for Julien Stephan and QPR to consider

The other angle, in a less optimistic scenario, is that the upside is still significant. Performances like this will not go unnoticed at a higher level with other suitors. If Kolli, Kone, or Vale continue on this trajectory during the final seven league games, their market values will soar.

That opens the door to sizeable transfer fees — and funds that could be reinvested to strengthen multiple areas of the squad and further embed a sustainable recruitment model. This is the blueprint increasingly adopted across the Championship, too.

In a world of parachute payments, it's imperative that the other sides without them are able to identify, develop, sell, and repeat that process. QPR may not have always been associated with that approach, but this current crop offers a chance to reset that identity.

The key for Stephan is balance. Keeping hold of talent long enough to remain competitive, while also knowing when to cash in, is a delicate art. However, the foundations now appear to be in place and they could potentially receive a cash windfall for one or more of the trio this summer.

One result towards the end of a season with nothing much to play for doesn’t define a project, but it can certainly illuminate its direction. For QPR, the emphatic win over Pompey may well be remembered as the moment the pieces started to fall into place for 2026/27 and beyond.
