Ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has come to the defence of compatriot Florian Wirtz after a slow start to life in English football.

Wirtz, who joined Liverpool in a £116 million move this summer, is without a goal or an assist for the reigning English champions since August’s Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace.

The 22-year-old was limited to a second-half cameo in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea just before the international break.

However, Klopp is adamant that there is no cause for concern yet over Wirtz.

“I don’t have to worry about Florian Wirtz because his quality is so outstanding,” the Red Bull Head of Soccer told RTL and n-tv (h/t The Mirror).

“Of course, everything is fine, and everyone knows that. The discussion is certainly being blown out of proportion.”

“If anyone’s worried – you don’t have to! You can stop.”

Wirtz is currently on duty with Germany at the World Cup qualifiers, where he helped them claim a routine 4-0 win over Luxembourg on Friday.

With Liverpool now trailing Arsenal in the Premier League table, they could really do with their marquee signing coming to life.

After winning seven straight matches to start the season, Arne Slot’s men have lost three on the bounce in the space of seven days.

Liverpool face a tough test at home to Manchester United when they return after the international break.
