La Liga’s plan to host the Barcelona vs Villarreal match in Miami has been cancelled, according to the reliable COPE.
The highly discussed fixture was originally planned for December 20 at Hard Rock Stadium, but it currently looks like the game will not take place in the United States.
This decision comes after weeks of growing opposition from players and fans.
Team captains, including Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal, spoke out strongly against the idea, arguing that moving a league game abroad would “distort the competition.”
Frenkie de Jong also had openly opposed the idea of playing the match in the United States.
Players across La Liga even held symbolic 15-second protests before matches to show their disapproval.
The players’ union (AFE) had also warned that the Miami plan lacked proper consultation and transparency.
Many saw it as a commercial move that ignored sporting fairness and fan experience.
For now, it remains unclear whether La Liga will try again to bring a domestic match to the U.S. — or if this controversy has closed the door on such plans for good.
As things stand, the game will be played at Villarreal’s home, Estadi de la Ceràmica.
