Claudio Marchisio questioned Luciano Spalletti’s decision to substitute Kenan Yildiz late in Juventus’ 2-1 defeat away to Napoli, calling the move unnecessary and potentially damaging in a match that was still finely balanced.

The Turkey international had been one of Juve’s brighter attacking outlets on the night and had already found the net, making his removal with 15 minutes remaining one of the talking points of the post-match analysis.

Spalletti opted to replace the No.10 with Lois Openda at 1-1, but the move failed to shift momentum in the Bianconeri’s favour. Instead, Napoli went on to score the decisive goal shortly afterwards, leaving Juventus empty-handed at the Maradona.

Juventus legend Marchisio ‘disagrees’ with Yildiz substitution

Marchisio, speaking in the DAZN studio, with quotes via IlBianconero, admitted he did not agree with the choice and felt Yildiz should have remained on the pitch during such a critical phase of the match. “I would never take a player like him off…” the former midfielder said, emphasising the youngster’s growing influence and importance in tight encounters.

Spalletti offered his own explanation in the press conference, responding indirectly to Marchisio’s remarks. The coach reminded reporters that rotation and game management have been recurring themes in recent weeks.

“Seven days ago you asked me whether he needed rest,” he said. “Today he was substituted a quarter of an hour from the end by Openda, who cost €45 million. Is that not allowed? It’s the little game of synonyms and opposites.”

He pushed back on the idea that Yildiz had physical problems, insisting the decision was tactical. “He wasn’t unwell, he has to do more, just like the whole team. He scored, but in certain moments he needs to give us more.”

The debate is unlikely to disappear quickly, with Yildiz now one of Juve’s most scrutinised and valuable attacking assets.
