Manchester United youth player Kai Rooney has made a major career decision.
All players who don the famous red shirt at youth level have a huge responsibility, but youngster Kai Rooney knows this more than most.
His father, Wayne Rooney, is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 253 goals.
All in all, he played a total of 559 times for the club and retired from playing at Derby County during the 2020–21 season.
His son has burst onto the scene this year at academy level and has become a regular feature of United’s successful under-18 team.
He scored a vital third goal in United’s 3-1 win over West Ham United in the semi-final of the Premier League Cup last weekend.
The 16-year-old suffered an injury at the start of the season, but he recovered to make his debut at Old Trafford in the FA Youth Cup against Derby County in January.
The Manchester Evening News reports that, “Manchester United youngster Kai Rooney has signed with Triple S Sports Management, the same agency dad Wayne was signed to. The global company is owned by his agent Paul Stretford with it clear the plans for Kai moving forward.”
The agency posted a message on their social media account stating, “we’re excited to begin working with the Manchester United forward as he continues his journey in the game. A bright future ahead. Welcome to the team, Kai!”
His father, Wayne Rooney, opened up on his son’s progress last year in an interview with the BBC and asserted, “he has great coaches at Manchester United, so I take a stand off approach.”
Rooney continued, “I speak to him, but for me it’s all about his mentality and his mindset, to make sure he keeps enjoying it – that’s the main thing for me.”
Kai will likely be in action next in the FA Youth Cup quarter-final against Sunderland on Wednesday, 18th March.
