Kaiserslautern defender Paul Joly is suspended for Saturday’s 2. Bundesliga opener at Wolfsburg. The club said in a statement that he will miss out after the French Professional Football League sanctioned him for a betting rules breach during his time at AJ Auxerre in 2024/25.

The season begins this weekend, with Bochum hosting Hertha a day before the primetime meeting at Volkswagen Arena.

A mid-January announcement listed several players and coaches as receiving seven-game bans, while Joly was among those punished for one match.

The suspension applies now, with the paperwork transmitted to the German Football Association before the season’s opener. The document does not detail the alleged offence and outlines a general ban on professional players betting on any football competition, domestic or international.

The 26-year-old right-back joined permanently this summer after a successful loan last term. He missed only five matches as Torsten Lieberknecht’s side finished sixth in 2. Bundesliga.
