Kane may stay longer at Bayern as Premier League interest cools

Harry Kane is considering extending his stay at Bayern Munich, after the England captain stated that his interest in returning to the Premier League has diminished.

The striker started the season at a rapid pace, with 18 goals in 10 games, boosting the Bavarians’ defense of their German Championship title. At 32 years old, Kane has already scored 103 goals in 106 matches for Bayern and is under contract until 2027, being “fully committed” to the club ahead of possible renewal negotiations.

“In terms of staying longer, I definitely see that possibility,” said Kane, who joined the England squad for the friendly against Wales and the World Cup qualifier in Latvia.

“I spoke openly a few weeks ago that I haven’t had those conversations with Bayern yet, but if they come up, I’d be willing to talk and have an honest conversation. Obviously, it depends on how things go over the next year and what we achieve together. Right now, we’re in a great moment and I’m not thinking about anything else.”

Return to the Premier League loses momentum

When Kane left Tottenham in 2023, it was expected that he would return to England to try to break the Premier League goal record. He needs 48 goals to surpass Alan Shearer’s mark of 260 goals.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank recently said he would love to have the club’s all-time top scorer back in London.

“Regarding the Premier League, I don’t know. If you had asked me when I left Tottenham to go to Bayern, I would have said for sure that I’d go back,” said Kane, who has a £57 million (US$66 million) release clause in his contract with Bayern. “Now that I’ve been there for a few years, I’d say that desire has diminished a bit, but I can’t say I’d never go back.”

Kane at Bayern: renewed motivation

Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, recently stated that the club is “probably seeing the best version of Harry Kane ever.”

Kane won the Bundesliga last season, his first major trophy, and that success motivated him even more.

“When you win a title like I did last year, it could be easy to relax and think: ‘Okay, I achieved what I wanted.’ But that gave me more motivation to do more and be better. I think I’ve shown that this year.”
