Karen Holmgaard is hoping for a memorable occasion as Everton officially move into Goodison Park this weekend.

Ahead of the Toffees’ first home game of the season at their new permanent stadium, she told the club’s official website that she always looked forward to playing in front of the Everton fans.

“We are so proud of them, and they are coming to every single game, and we need to celebrate the wins and the town with them, and they’re always here.”

Everton announced at the end of last season that Goodison Park would be the new permanent home of the women’s team.

Karen Holmgaard on “exciting” season ahead

Everton got off to the perfect start in the Women’s Super League when they beat local rivals Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield.

Although playing a more defensive role than she has generally been used to, Holmgaard got an assist after coming on as a second-half substitute with Everton holding a narrow 2-1 lead.

“I really enjoyed it. I just came on at half-time, trying to not think about things. I was just playing and that’s where I’m the best version of myself. I was really enjoying it, and we scored a lot of goals in the second half, which was really important for us, so it was an amazing win today.”

She reflected that the first half did not showcase Everton’s best level, adding: “Everton is all about hard work, and we need to show passion and character, and I really feel like we were doing that in the second half as a team. We showed passion, we were winning the duels, and you can see we won that second half and we won that game, so it just means a lot for me and for the team.

“The season ahead is exciting.”

Karen Holmgaard on the Women’s Euros: “I can play at the highest level”

Holmgaard was part of the Denmark squad that competed in the 2025 Women’s Euros, but did not make it out of a tough group stage, losing to Sweden, Germany and Poland.

Although she was unsurprisingly disappointed with the results during the summer, she was pleased to have played every game, having spent much of 2024-25 recovering from hip surgery for long-standing problems.

She explained: “I showed myself that I can be playing football on the highest level I can be with the national team, and I showed…that I’m fit when I get the support.”
