Albion striker shows disappointment as teammate departs for Ipswich Town
West Bromwich Albion forward Karlan Grant has made his feelings clear following the departure of long-serving defender Darnell Furlong to Ipswich Town.
Furlong, 29, has joined Championship rivals Ipswich for an undisclosed fee, understood to be in the region of £4 million.
The right back had been a fixture in the Albion side since his arrival from Queens Park Rangers in 2019, making more than 240 appearances across all competitions and helping the club to promotion to the Premier League in his debut season.
Grant responded to Albion’s official announcement of the transfer with a simple sad face emoji, a gesture that underlined the sense of disappointment felt by many inside The Hawthorns and in the stands at the loss of a popular teammate and player.
During his time in the Black Country, Furlong became known for his consistency, versatility, and trademark long throws, which provided Albion with a unique attacking weapon.
Following Kyle Bartley’s retirement, he was also the club’s longest-serving player and wore the captain’s armband on several occasions.
The Tractor Boys have moved decisively in the transfer market to secure Furlong on a contract until 2028, further bolstering a defensive unit already reinforced by the arrival of veteran fullback Ashley Young from Everton.
Furlong joins a growing list of former West Brom players now at Portman Road, including Alex Palmer, Conor Townsend, Cedric Kipre, Dara O’Shea and David Button.
Speaking to Ipswich's in-house media after signing, Furlong described the move as “a real privilege” and praised the ambition shown by Kieran McKenna’s side. confirmed
“Ipswich is a club sending out a real signal of intent and to be a part of that is exciting,” he said.
Albion confirmed the transfer in a brief statement, thanking Furlong for his service and wishing him well for the future. The move marks the end of a six-year spell in which the defender was one of the club’s most dependable performers.
Grant’s succinct reaction to the news captured the emotions of many supporters, who had seen Furlong become a symbol of reliability and commitment at The Hawthorns.
