Belgium celebrated a resounding 6-0 victory over Kazakhstan on Sunday evening. Such was the manner of the game, national coach Ali Aliyev offered his resignation after the game in Brussels.
Belgium scored six goals for the second World Cup qualifying match in a row as they thrashed Kazakhstan to move above Wales and into second place in Group J. Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku starred with a brace each, while Nicolas Raskin and Thomas Meunier also got on the scoresheet.
After this match, and the previous defeat to Wales, a despondent Aliyev saw no reason to stay on as national coach after his side ultimately failed to qualify for the 2026 tournament.
“I take full responsibility. Everything that happened today is my fault. The players are not to blame. I take full responsibility for this heavy defeat. I will immediately go to the federation management and offer them my resignation.”
Aliyev had been at the helm since January and oversaw six matches. Five of those have been defeats, with the one win coming against Liechtenstein.
