Kenny Dalglish has revealed he is undergoing treatment for cancer and asked for privacy for him and his family. He said in a social media post that he had hoped to keep the matter private.
The Liverpool great confirmed the diagnosis by mistake after sharing a post that revealed it, which he put down to his limited tech skills.
He also thanked the medical staff for their care and discretion.
Dalglish, 75, made 515 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 172 goals, and later managed the club across two spells with three league titles in 381 games. The Scot was Ballon d'Or runner-up in 1983.
Liverpool expressed support for Dalglish and stressed that his privacy should be respected.
Before Liverpool, he spent nine seasons at Celtic, the only other club of his career. For Scotland he holds the record with 102 caps and shares the scoring mark with Denis Law on 30 goals.
