Manchester City beat Arsenal 2-0 in Sunday’s League Cup final, with Kepa Arrizabalaga’s mistake central to the outcome.

Nico O’Reilly struck in the 60th minute after a handling error from the Arsenal goalkeeper, giving Pep Guardiola’s side a decisive lead. L'Équipe notes that the slip put the Spaniard under immediate scrutiny.

This is not a new storyline for Arrizabalaga in this competition. In 2019, while at Chelsea, he refused to come off when Maurizio Sarri tried to substitute him as the match headed for a penalty shootout, and the Blues lost to Manchester City after a 0-0 draw and a 4-3 defeat on penalties.

In 2022, again with Chelsea, he was brought on specifically for the shootout against Liverpool. He then missed his own kick, sending the ball over, and Liverpool won 11-10.

Sunday’s error adds to a bleak run for Arrizabalaga in League Cup finals, a stage that continues to prove unforgiving for him.
