Kevin Keegan, 75, has said his cancer has advanced to stage 4, according to the Daily Mail.
He told an audience at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House in Newcastle at the weekend that he had been informed of a renowned doctor using a new approach to tackle his illness.
Newcastle sent their sincere support and warmest wishes to Keegan and his family.
In early January he said he was undergoing treatment for a recently diagnosed cancer, without disclosing its type or severity, and that he had been admitted to hospital after significant abdominal symptoms.
Keegan joined Liverpool in 1971 at the age of 20, won three English league titles and the European title in 1977, then moved to Hamburg that year.
He later played for Southampton and Newcastle, won 63 caps and scored 21 goals for England, whom he captained, before managing Newcastle, Fulham, Manchester City and England.
