Kikin Fonseca, the former Benfica and Mexico striker, has reflected on facing Portugal at the 2006 World Cup, recalling his goal in a 2-1 group-stage defeat. He also discussed Sunday’s friendly between the nations.
"Back then Cristiano Ronaldo was already there, and they had Luís Figo, Simão Sabrosa, Maniche, who scored against us, and my team-mate Petit. It was a very good side, with players who were not at such high-profile clubs as now, but with great quality," he told Record.
"Scoring against big teams is always very good and I remember that, despite the defeat, I ended up receiving the man of the match award. It would help me with the move to Benfica."
"It was a fair result, Mexico did well in the first half, pressing Portugal so they did not feel comfortable and you could see it in the misplaced passes. Then, with the changes, important players came into midfield like Vitinha and João Neves, and they ended up winning the ball off the Mexicans."
Fonseca joined Benfica at the start of 2006/2007. He did not establish himself, scoring three goals, one against Belenenses and a brace versus Oliveira de Bairro, in 13 appearances, and he retired in 2013.
