Highly respected Manchester United goalkeeping scout Tony Coton was reportedly in attendance at a Cymru Premier fixture on Tuesday night to watch Kit Margetson.
Coton has built a formidable reputation as one of football’s sharpest talent-spotters, particularly when it comes to identifying goalkeeping talent.
He has widely been credited for United snapping up David de Gea from Atletico Madrid in 2011. De Gea’s time at Old Trafford was a resounding success, underscored by his status as the club’s record appearance-holder and leader in clean sheets among goalkeepers.
More recently, it emerged that Coton pushed for the signing of Senne Lammens, who joined the club last summer from Royal Antwerp.
Now-sacked head coach Ruben Amorim advocated for the club to bring in Emiliano Martinez but Coton got his way and the club secured Lammens’ services. Slotting in effortlessly at United, the Belgian has brought a sense of calm and composure that was previously missing. His reliability has been a cornerstone of the defence, and it increasingly looks as though United have found their goalkeeper for the next ten years.
According to Y Clwb Pel-droed, it seems that Coton already has his sights on another promising goalkeeping prospect – Kit Margetson.
It’s understood that Coton was present at the Essity Stadium as Connah’s Quay Nomads fell to a 2-1 defeat against The New Saints.
The result sealed an 18th league title for The New Saints.
Malcolm Allen, a 14-cap Wales international who played with Coton at Watford, was on commentary and said, “I’m going to tell you the truth, he told me he’s watching Kit.”
“It’s great to see the Cymru Premier pulling in scouts from the biggest clubs in the world. He’s competent in what he’s doing. He’s growing up, and every time I see him play, he’s growing up in front of me.”
Margetson is currently on loan at Connah’s Quay Nomads from Swansea City. His performances have attracted attention. In addition to United, other Premier League clubs like Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, and Liverpool are also said to be admirers of his.
The 19-year-old has been an ever-present for Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Cymru Premier this season, keeping eight clean sheets in 27 appearances. Such impressive form at club level has earned him two call-ups to the Wales Under-21 squad.
He has yet to make his debut, only being named on the bench on both occasions.
