Eintracht scored in the final minute of added time to salvage a 3-3 draw at Werder Bremen. The hosts had come from behind twice after goals from Kalimuendo (1’) and Collins (56’).
Switching things up
Dino Toppmöller made four changes to the side that started at the MHP Arena on Tuesday, bringing Nnamdi Collins, Mo Dahoud, Nathaniel Brown and Farès Chaibi into his starting line-up at the Weserstadion.
Aurèle Amenda, Oscar Højlund and Ansgar Knauff were named on the bench, while new signing Younes Ebnoutalib was unavailable after being ruled out for several weeks with knee ligament damage.
Pegged back after incredible start
Eintracht took an early lead for the second game in succession against Horst Steffen’s side, finding the net after just 51 seconds. Ritsu Doan’s cross into the area was headed back by Brown into the path of Arnaud Kalimuendo, who flicked the ball over the line for his first Frankfurt goal.
Bremen forward Justin Njinmah sent a low shot narrowly wide of the far post on 20 minutes but soon made amends for his near-miss, playing a one-two with Romano Schmid before beating Kauã Santos with a calm finish and leaving the teams locked together at 1-1 going into half-time.
Knauff saves the day
The Eagles restored their advantage 11 minutes into the second half. After beating Isaac Schmidt to a loose ball, Collins found Chaibi via a somewhat fortunate deflection off Kalimuendo. The Algerian’s looping ball into the penalty area was then met on the half-volley by Collins, who steered home his first goal of the season.
The lively Njinmah fired wide after connecting with Jens Stage’s long ball midway through the second half, but Stage steered Samuel Mbangula’s delivery into the far corner to restore parity again with 12 minutes remaining. Stuttgart loanee Jovan Milosevic completed the turnaround two minutes later, rolling home Mbangula’s cut-back for his first Werder goal.
It looked like Eintracht were heading for a second 3-2 defeat in succession, but there was to be another late twist as Knauff converted Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab’s cross deep into stoppage time to make it 3-3. There was a nervous wait while VAR checked whether the ball had gone out of play in the build-up, but the effort was allowed to stand.
