Mateo Kovacic says he remains confident of his future at Manchester City despite ongoing speculation linking the Croatia international with a move back to Serie A.

The 32-year-old has been linked with Juventus and former club Inter Milan after entering the final year of his contract. However, speaking to BBC Sport, Kovacic insisted he has received clear backing from the club ahead of the new season.

“I didn’t feel the question marks from them,” he said.

“I spoke with them, it was that they count on me, which was important for me to hear that from them.”

Kovacic added that it is now up to him to justify that faith on the pitch.

“For the players it’s always on you to show your best version, because if you are playing good, the manager will put you first.”

The midfielder’s comments follow Enzo Maresca’s recent remarks that Kovacic remains part of his plans while he is at the club, although the City boss stopped short of guaranteeing the veteran’s long-term future.

After an injury-hit campaign limited him to just nine appearances last season, Kovacic will hope for greater involvement this term. With Rodri recovering from back surgery and expected to miss the opening weeks of the campaign, the Croatian could have an opportunity to establish himself in Maresca’s midfield during the early stages of the season.

Despite the transfer speculation, Kovacic’s message was unequivocal: he believes Manchester City still have confidence in him, and his focus is on proving his value on the pitch.
