Kubo has suffered a left knee injury at the 2026 World Cup, leaving him a major doubt for Japan’s remaining group fixtures.
Kubo went off in the 75th minute of Monday’s match against the Netherlands after a heavy knee-to-knee clash with Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries. According to AS, he was later seen moving with difficulty around the stadium, at times in a wheelchair.
An MRI has confirmed damage to his left knee, and he is currently unable to train. He is not expected to leave the camp, but his involvement in the next two group games is uncertain.
Japan face Tunisia on Sunday 21 June at six in the morning.
It would be another setback for Kubo, who was injured in January for Real Sociedad against Barcelona at Anoeta. On 18 January under Pellegrino Matarazzo he suffered a significant muscle tear that sidelined him for several matches.
He returned on 26 March but struggled to find rhythm in the closing league games, and he was a substitute in the Copa del Rey final as he was not yet ready.
