Leeds ended their Elland Road campaign with a 1-0 win over Brighton as Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck in stoppage time, lifting them to 47 points and 14th.

Daniel Farke’s side contained their Champions League-chasing visitors as Brighton snatched at openings. When Jan Paul van Hecke under-hit a back-pass, Calvert-Lewin rounded Bart Verbruggen and rolled in five minutes into added time.

Farke faced a bruising week on the injury front, having been without Jayden Bogle, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Ilia Gruev, Noah Okafor and Facundo Buonanotte against Tottenham, then losing Pascal Struijk mid-game and Ethan Ampadu to illness before Brighton. Ampadu, a major doubt after missing Friday training, started, made a goal-saving clearance and controlled his area across the 90. Leeds must tie down their captain this summer, which might be among their most important bits of business.

With the World Cup 24 days away, two Leeds hopefuls sparked concern. Brenden Aaronson went off with a dead leg mid-way through the second half, while Anton Stach landed awkwardly after an aerial duel with Carlos Baleba, tried to continue, then was stretchered off in clear pain. Stach is not guaranteed a Germany call but might feel closer than he has for years, and this would be a cruel setback.

Two England striker contenders shared the stage, both starting on 13 Premier League goals. Danny Welbeck threatened before departing on 64 minutes, denied at one stage by Ampadu’s superb intervention, but Calvert-Lewin stayed on to pounce late. He now has 14, more than Welbeck and level with Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, three in his last three, with Thomas Tuchel naming his England squad on Friday.
