Kylian Mbappé finished as top scorer at the 2026 World Cup, in La Liga and in the Champions League this season, yet ended the campaign without a trophy.
L'Équipe highlights the unusual contrast in a year defined by prolific finishing but no silverware.
With 10 goals in eight matches, the France captain led the World Cup scoring, two clear of Lionel Messi. Argentina were beaten 1-0 after extra time in Sunday’s final. Having also topped the charts in Qatar, he is the first player to lead the World Cup scoring in successive editions.
The Real Madrid forward also won the La Liga scoring race for the second successive season with 25 goals, two ahead of Mallorca striker Vedat Muriqi.
Despite Madrid going out in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Mbappé still finished as the competition’s top scorer with 15 in 11, one more than Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane. The individual return was tempered by the absence of trophies.
