France captain Kylian Mbappé enjoyed a perfect night against Iraq on Monday, scoring twice in a 3-0 win. The Real Madrid forward registered his sixth World Cup brace, drawing level with Miroslav Klose and sending France into the last 32.

L'Équipe notes that no player in the competition's history has put together braces quite like him. On matchday one against Senegal, he had already scored twice, first from a Michael Olise assist, then with a crisp late strike, in a 3-1 victory.

His knack for doubles was a hallmark of 2022. In the final against Argentina, with the game drifting away, he scored in the 80th and 81st minutes, then added a third in extra time, but France lost on penalties.

A few days earlier in the last 16 against Poland, a 3-1 win, he found the net twice in the second half. In the group stage he combined with Theo Hernandez for a one-two to score on 61 minutes against Denmark, then struck again on 86 to seal a 2-1 success, after opening his tournament against Australia.

His first World Cup brace arrived in 2018. In the last 16 against Argentina, a 4-3 epic, he won the penalty converted by Griezmann, then sealed qualification by scoring France’s third and fourth goals.
