Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to be the centre of transfer speculations at FC Barcelona heading into the January transfer window.

The 33-year-old club captain only recently returned after a lengthy layoff, having undergone back surgery during the summer.

With Joan Garcia firmly established as the starting goalkeeper and Wojciech Szczesny available to provide cover, Ter Stegen is unlikely to get many minutes on the pitch, a situation which will affect his chances of making Germany’s World Cup squad.

As such, talks of a potential loan move have been gaining weight, even though the veteran shot-stopper remains reluctant to leave.

Girona manager on Ter Stegen pursuit

Despite that, Barcelona’s local rivals Girona have emerged as potential suitors for Ter Stegen and are prepared to go all out to secure his services.

Now, Girona coach Michel, who received the jury award at the Catalan Football Federation gala earlier today, has broken his silence on the team’s interest in the Barcelona goalkeeper.

“He is a top player, everyone would like to have a player like that,” he stated, as quoted by SPORT.

While Girona are interested in signing Ter Stegen, and Barcelona would be willing to facilitate his departure, there may be complications in the deal going through.

For starters, as mentioned previously, the player himself remains reluctant to leave the club at the moment.

Moreover, his high salary would pose a hurdle for Girona and they would require Barcelona to cover a large chunk of his wages for the second half of the season.

So, it remains to be seen how things evolve in the coming days with the January window just around the corner.
