Young Argentine international Franco Mastantuono, a Real Madrid player, is facing a potentially severe disciplinary sanction after insulting referee Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz during Monday night's clash between his team and Getafe.
Álvaro Arbeloa’s men suffered a shock home defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu, beaten by Getafe (1-0) on Matchday 26 of La Liga.
Franco Mastantuono was shown a straight red card in the 94th minute. The Spanish league later released the details of the incident through the official referee’s report.
According to this document, the former River Plate player directed direct verbal insults at the referee. He reportedly approached and shouted repeatedly:
“What a shame… what a shame, you idiot,” repeating the words several times.
It’s worth noting that the disciplinary code of the Spanish Football Federation provides for a suspension of two to three matches, which can be extended up to a month, for any player who insults or verbally disrespects a referee—unless the incident is considered more serious.
